“Hey Google, show me exercise tips”

When we need answers we go to Google. Today we look at the top Google searches for "exercise tips." I think you'll see that my insight will be more valuable than Google's results.

Exercise tips for beginners

Google says:

  • Set realistic goals
  • Be consistent
  • Too much too soon
  • Except feelings of discomfort
  • Try something new

Hans says: I agree with goals setting, but let's take this to the next level: SMART goals get us on point. Additionally we need to take a deep dive to figure out our 'why?' Why are we exercising? After your first answer, ask again: but why?

Beginners need to design their fitness game plan, and that's the theme of season one of my podcast.

Exercise tips to lose weight

Google says:

  • Have a partner
  • Have a plan, schedule your workouts
  • weigh yourself daily
  • Don't do too much too fast
  • Log your workouts
  • Cook more often

Hans says: weight loss is like a graduate degree. And a consistent fitness program is your bachelors. Show me at least three months of a workout plan that regularly includes five days per week, then you can start a weight loss goal.

The hard truth: your food isn’t on point, you don't have enough muscle, you're too stressed, and you don't sleep enough. But the good news is after three months of strength and conditioning, you're in a better place to tackle these weight loss essentials.

Exercise tips for at home

Google says:

  • Put it on your schedule
  • Have the equipment
  • Tell family you're unavailable
  • Don't get distracted

Hans says: 'Don't get distracted" Really, that's the what I need to know? Even I have a hard time working out at home. But I own a gym. Working out at home has been taken to a new level and I believe it's forever changed now - and that's a great thing. Do yourself a favor: pick a program that requires minimal equipment from a gym or coach you completely trust. I created IP Athlete for this type of person. It requires a set of dumbbells, TRX straps, a jump rope and a pair of running shoes.

Exercise tips for seniors

Google says:

  • Walking
  • Yoga
  • Bands
  • Water aerobics

Hans says: Why is the Fit and Fabulous listeners interested in exercise tips for seniors? Because we need to take care of our parents, our grandparents, and one day we'll be seniors ourselves! Get a vision for the future, start training for it now. At the same time, understand the value of our parents being strong and fit - everyone wins! We have to help them (physically) less but it's not for our benefit, it's for theirs. Typically seniors have more time so developing an at-home program that is safe is so valuable. Start with daily walks and an old backpack that can be filled with two different weights (three different combinations!) for strength training.

Summary

At the end of the day here's the essential questions: What do you want that you do not have? And what are you willing to do to get it?

I suggest you find a program you believe in - it should be 8-12 weeks long (and I'm not talking about a silly 'challenge'). You could also find a coach - some people just need someone to tell them what what to do. Need coach? I'm happy to chat. Lastly, find a team that works together towards a common goal. We aren’t meant to do fitness alone.
